MDC-T Harare Proportional Representation MP, Ronia Bunjira, has succumbed to cancer. In a condolence message yesterday, MDC-T spokesperson Obert Gutu described Bunjira, who died at a private hospital on Saturday, as a dedicated party cadre and the epitome of democracy.
“The MDC would like to express its deepest condolences on the untimely passing on of our Harare Province women’s assembly chairlady Ronia Bunjira,” Gutu said in a statement.
“Hon Bunjira will be remembered for her selfless and tireless work in making sure that MDC remained strong, united, unshakeable and focused. We mourn the sad passing on of a gallant and fearless fighter for the total and unconditional emancipation of all Zimbabweans, particularly women.”
After years of mudslinging, the MDC led by Morgan Tsvangirai and the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) led by Tendai Biti, are now back on talking terms with the latter saying it has now realised that it was pandering to Zanu PF whims when it used to attack the former prime minister.
Speaking to the Daily News yesterday PDP spokesperson Jacob Mafume said it has always been Zanu PF’s wish to see Tsvangirai and Biti squabbling but those “dark days” are gone now as opposition parties start to engage with the aim of forming a grand coalition.
The MDC has escalated its 2018 election campaign, with the Morgan Tsvangirai-led party deploying its senior officials to the rural areas to consolidate its support base in the countryside. The rural areas have been the stronghold of the ruling Zanu PF, where it has been garnering most of its support as compared to the urban communities.
